The main power quality problems in the industry can be divided into two broad categories: steady state and transient state.
Below we will tell you about transient state power quality problems and their possible consequences on your operation.
These are sudden short-term voltage changes that can cause equipment damage or safety hazards.
Transient Voltage Surge: A disturbance in the supply voltage with a duration of less than half a cycle that can be caused by atmospheric discharges, energization of capacitors, disconnection of large motors or fault isolation.
Notch: A supply voltage disturbance with a duration of less than half a cycle that can be caused by phase-to-phase shorts during SCR switching or thyristor switching.
Sag: Decrease or reduction in supply voltage with duration from 8.33 ms to 1 minute caused by atmospheric discharges, short circuits or start-up of large loads.
Swells: Increase in supply voltage with a short duration of 8.33 ms to 10 seconds. They are caused by atmospheric discharges, short circuits and operation output of large loads that can cause damage or overloads in the equipment.
They are complete interruptions in the power supply that produce a reduction in the supply voltage greater than 90% and can cause damage to equipment and safety risks, in addition to economic costs of labor, waste of raw material and reduction in production.
They can be caused by main power failures related to main switch operation, weather, accident, wildlife, equipment failure and/or human error.
