Analogy for understanding an active harmonic filter (APF)

Analogy for understanding an active harmonic filter (APF)

An analogy to better understand how an active harmonic filter works may be that of noise-canceling headphones. Noise canceling headphones use active noise cancellation technology to reduce unwanted ambient noise.

Similarly, an active harmonic filter uses active technology to reduce harmonic distortion in electrical power systems caused by nonlinear loads.

Just as noise-canceling headphones have a microphone that listens for ambient noise and generates an opposing sound wave to cancel it out, an active filter has a measurement system that "listens" for noise in the power system and generates a compensating current to cancel out that which is less than ideal.

In short, an active filter is like noise-canceling headphones for the electrical power system. They use active technology to reduce unwanted harmonic distortion, correct power factor and improve the voltage regulation and unbalance of the power grid.
